Paleokarya – The most photogenic bridge in Greece

#uniquedestinations

In the beautiful Paleokarya ravine, crystal-clear waters of the river Paleokaritis run through dense forest and remarkable wild terrain. This river springs from nearby mountains and flows onward into the larger Portaikos river, creating a pristine natural landscape.

A single-arched stone bridge stands in a rocky strait about 500 metres from the village of Kato Paleokarya. The bridge likely dates back to the sixteenth century and once served as one of Thessaly’s main connections with Epirus.

The bridge and waterfalls

Local builders created the sturdy stone bridge with excellent technique, framing it with steep high rocks. Engineers built two dams in the 1970s: one in front of the bridge and one behind it, forming artificial waterfalls.

The larger waterfall now provides a water curtain backdrop that enhances the setting with dramatic flowing water. Sunlight sometimes penetrates the water droplets beneath the bridge, producing breathtaking light effects for visitors.

The popularity of the bridge

In recent years, locals built a large plateau near the bridge with stone steps and open yards for easier access. Photographers, both professional and amateur, now visit the bridge to capture its unique scenic beauty. On holidays and weekends, local vendors set up stalls selling traditional products near the bridge site.

How to reach Paleokarya

Start your journey on the road from Pyli toward Stournareika and follow the clear signs for Paleokarya. After passing the small bridge, turn left onto the dirt road, and you’ll find the stone bridge within about one hundred metres. If you miss the turn, continue a few metres further to a small wooden kiosk on the left side of the road. From the kiosk, a stone staircase leads up to the top of the bridge and across to the opposite ravine side.

If you do not turn at the sign and continue on the road for a few metres, you see a small wooden kiosk on the left side. From this point begins a stone staircase that leads to the top of the stone bridge and from there you can cross to the other side of the ravine.

A remarkable photogenic spot

You don’t need photography training to capture photos here, but no single image perfectly reflects the location’s true magic. Your personal images from this remarkable photogenic spot will impress friends and become treasured travel memories. Only by visiting this breathtaking place will you fully feel the wonder that surrounds it.
