Lefkes – The elegant heart of inland Paros
Perched on the slopes of Mount Agioi Pantes, Lefkes is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Once the mediaeval capital of Paros, it enchants visitors with marble-paved alleyways and traditional whitewashed houses. Prodromos – A village frozen in time
A short drive from Lefkes is the lovely village of Prodromos, which has not been spoilt by mass tourism. Prodromos is much quieter and smaller than Lefkes and provides a more peaceful and intimate experience. The village welcomes visitors with its usual stone entrance, leading into narrow whitewashed streets and quiet squares. The charming village is full of flower-filled courtyards and traditional houses that add colour and character.
Here and away from the busier parts of Paros during the summer, the pace of life is slower. There is real Cycladic hospitality to take time out for and enjoy in a family-run tavern and a couple of shops. Traditional homes and beautifully refurbished churches also help to maintain the village’s timeless character.
Prodromos is a place where travellers can get away from the crowds and gain real insight into the day-to-day life on Paros. Traditions are still important here in the community, in an atmosphere that is more and more rare on the rest of the island. Finally, in Prodromos, every August, the Chickpea Festival takes place. It is a popular summer food event that celebrates revithada, the traditional slow-baked local chickpea soup cooked overnight in clay pots inside wood-fired ovens.
Kostos – The quiet soul of Paros
Of the three settlements, the village of Kostos is the least visited and, perhaps, the most authentic of all. It lies in the eastern hills of the island and has a quiet atmosphere and a traditional Cycladic character. This is a quiet inland village of narrow lanes, traditional houses, small chapels and friendly people. Here the world still moves at the slower pace of country-island life.
At the heart of the village lies the central square, where Kafeneio o Kostos serves as a social meeting point. Locals and visitors mingle here, making the traditional cafe an important part of everyday village life.
