Europe’s most beautiful road
Located in the midwest part of the Norwegian coast, the Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsvegen in Norwegian) is one of the most scenic drives in the world. Driving along this road is like crossing the sea. It is built on several small islands, which are connected by several causeways and bridges. The most famous of the bridges is Storseisundet Bridge. The road turns and passes over the wild waves of the frozen Norwegian Sea, which often crash over the construction during storms.
Norwegian Construction of the Century
The route was originally designed as a railway line in the early 20th century. However, Norwegian authorities abandoned this plan. The planning of the road started again in the 1970s, and construction began on 1 August 1983. During construction, twelve European windstorms hit the area. The road began its operation on 7 July 1989, having cost 122 million Norwegian kroner. The road is classified as a cultural heritage site and a National Tourist Route. It is a popular site to film automotive commercials. Also, it has been declared the world’s best road trip and has been awarded the title “Norwegian Construction of the Century”.
